Villanova men's basketball head coach Kevin Willard made a remark about firing his coaching staff during a timeout interview amid a struggle against Utah State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The comment, delivered to CBS Sports reporter Lauren Shehadi, drew attention after the Wildcats' defeat.
"I’m going to fire my staff," Willard said. "Because we’ve given up eight points on underneath, out-of-bounds defense. The only thing I’m going do is fire them and get a new staff." The moment gained viral attention.
In the post-game interview, Willard addressed the remark when questioned by reporters. "We gave up a big three-pointer late," he said, per CBS Sports. "I’m probably going to have to make some changes to my staff because of how bad we were."
When pressed further, Willard clarified: "It’s a joke. God bless it.… I don’t care. Welcome to my life. It’s a joke."
Willard expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance, noting issues with inbound plays and second-half execution against the Aggies' pressure. Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun commented on his team's motivation after the win.
